“butter mot”. i had to look at both sides of the sign to find the whole name, and then when i wanted to plot it here, had difficulty finding it because i was looking on the south side of the highway and the motel was on the north side!

A sign by the parking lot at the Crater Rim Trail by Naked Driver
back at the parking lot, i decided to take this shot. i then climbed down the vent trail and back up, but saw nothing noteworthy to photograph there. i then left the area and drove back to the highway westbound. some time later, i happened to rest the sole of my right foot against my left leg while the cruise was set. something was poking my leg! i felt my sole with my right hand (but making sure i could maintain steering control). i felt thorns! i knew what had happened. while on the boca trail, i recalled seeing some prickly pears, one of which i had photographed. i must have stepped on one—and never realized it! i waited till i got back to raton to remove the thorns. i had them in both feet! that is how tough my soles are!

Now coming back down (on the north side of the mountain), and the parking lot appears a bit closer. by Naked Driver
having reached the summit, and shown i was there, it seems only logical that i would return via the path on the opposite side. i think i placed the marker correctly.

i drove up to the crater rim trailhead. this is at its lower end. there are several signs like the one in the corner in this area of the parking lot; i put the marker on one of them. it was fairly windy up here. those buildings near the middle of the pic are the visitor center area!

this trail switchbacks a lot as one climbs the mountain. the guide called a strenuous climb, but i think it was moderate. i have no idea where this tree is on the trail.
