Notre Dame after the Fire from rue d'Arcole by Beausoleil
After the April fire in Notre Dame, they had it pretty well closed off but by early June the streets leading up to it were starting to open which was probably a huge relief to the businesses along those streets. When we arrived in May, rue d'Arcole was closed off but by the end of our trip in early June, we could walk all the way to fences surrounding only Parvis Notre Dame. It will be a long time before we can visit the Cathedral again though . . .

Notre Dame from the Pont au Change in Paris by Beausoleil
This was a month after the horrible April fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. As you can see from this photo from the bridge, the entire steeple and most of the roof is gone. It was a very sad time in Paris.

Cluny Museum - Kings of Judah Exhibit by Beausoleil
This was a temporary exhibit in solidarity with Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris following the recent terrible fire. The Kings of Judah were on the Cathedral before the Revolution and the sculptures were beheaded because the revolutionaries thought they were kings of France. The lost heads were recovered in 1977 and the Cluny Museum has had them ever since. This exhibit was only until July of 2019 probably because some other exhibit was already scheduled but we were fortunate enough to be in Paris during the time they were on view.

View from the roof of the Institut du Monde Arabe by Beausoleil
The Arab World Institute, in French the Institut du Monde Arabe, is an organization founded in Paris in 1980 by 18 Arab countries with France to research and disseminate information about the Arab world and its cultural and spiritual values. Inside are a museum, library, auditorium, restaurant, offices and meeting rooms. Visible behind the outside glass wall, a metallic screen unfolds with moving geometric motifs. The motifs are actually 240 photo-sensitive motor-controlled apertures, or shutters, which act as a sophisticated brise soleil that automatically opens and closes to control the amount of light and heat from the sun entering the building. The mechanism creates interior spaces with filtered light — an effect often used in Islamic architecture with its climate-oriented strategies. It is also beautiful. The restaurant is on the roof and has marvelous views over Paris. On this occasion, it gave us a view of the newly-burned Notre Dame just after they had put a temporary canvas cover on the roof to protect the inside.

Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris after the fire by Beausoleil
We were horrified to see the tragic fire on television right before our trip to Paris. Notre Dame is usually one of our first stops when we land and this time it was not to be. The venerable Cathedral was fenced off and guarded by police at every turn. Of course all Parisians and every tourist in town wanted to see it so all streets leading to it were very crowded and pictures extremely difficult to take. Distant photos were the norm and this was our first view after landing. It actually looks quite good from here but we walked around the entire block and from the back you can see much of the damage. So sad . . .

Looking down rue Beaubourg to Notre Dame and the well-covered Pantheon in the distance by Beausoleil
They were working on the Pantheon on this visit to Paris so it was covered in this white, umbrella-like creation. The top was plain but if you got close enough to see it well, the part underneath the umbrella part had a scene of Parisian people painted on it. It certain did get your attention and is no replacement for the dome of the Pantheon.

Notre Dame de Paris - Stained Glass by Beausoleil
The Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris is the most visited monument in France. The glorious Gothic church was begun in 1163, when Pope Alexander III laid the foundation stone and wasn’t completed until 1345. It was devastated by fire in April of 2019. They are in the process of restoration so I'm glad I took many photos over the years before the fire. We visited a few days after the fire and saw much of the destruction . . . heartbreaking. Fortunately the three large rose windows were saved.
