The White Swan Inn - Pickering by Beausoleil
Originally built in 1532 as a four-room cottage, it was soon extended and pressed into service as a coaching inn for the York to Whitby stagecoach. The White Swan has been open for business as an inn more or less ever since the 16th century. Two notable exceptions were when it served as the town’s Court House for a brief spell, and during the last War when it served as Pickering Garrison’s NCO Mess. The family running today has owned it since 1953.

Whitestonecliffe Inn by Beausoleil
Driving from Dalton-in-Furness to Pickering we planned to stop for lunch in Thirsk. However, when we arrived, the town water was shut off and the restaurants were either closed or serving cold sandwiches on paper plates, We opted to move on for lunch elsewhere and found Whitestonecliffe Inn at Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe. It was friendly, cozy and had excellent food. Good choice.

Entrance to the Courtyard with restaurants and facilities by Beausoleil
Holker Hall, home of the Cavendish Family, has never been bought or sold but passed by inheritance through just three families: the Prestons, the Lowthers and the Cavendishes, with each generation leaving its impression by either altering the landscape or by changing the house by adding, refacing, embellishing or even rebuilding, as happened to the New Wing after the disastrous fire of 1871. There is an excellent display about the famous fire. We took a tour in the morning, had lunch there and wandered the Hall and Gardens by ourselves in the afternoon.

Lunch at The Queen’s Head Pub in Hawkshead by Beausoleil
We looked at menus at the many restaurants in Hawkshead and The Queen's Head Pub was our choice. They had wonderful paintings of all kinds of dogs which was a plus. The food was excellent and the atmosphere pleasant.

A beautiful little village in the Lake District. We had lunch at the Queen's Inn, visited the Beatrix Potter Gallery and walked around town.

Caffe Riva in Bowness-in-Windermere by Beausoleil
Pretty café at the corner of A5074 and A592 at St. Martin's Place in Bowness-in-Windermere. It's across from the Parish Church of Saint Martin which is a must-see in Bowness.

Upstairs at The Brown Cow Inn Restaurant in Dalton-in-Furness by Beausoleil
We planned to eat at Hartley's but didn't make a reservation. Bad idea; they were full. They suggested The Steakhouse but it was rented for a wedding that night so we kept walking to The Brown Cow Inn and not only did they have a table for us, but we had a very nice dinner there. We did get to Hartley's a couple other times during the week and loved it.

The Post Office . . . and the Post Office Café on Lindisfarne Island by Beausoleil
This café was suggested to us and we were surprised to find it attached to the real Post Office. I don't think they're connected in any way except by being in the same building, but it was a very good restaurant and we had a lovely lunch there.

Bill's Restaurant on Saddler Street by Beausoleil
We walked down from the Cathedral for a wonderful lunch at Bill's. Their fish pie is scrumptious. It is also a reasonable walk back to the Cathedral to finish our tour of it.

Golden Fleece Hotel in Thirsk by Beausoleil
We couldn't face a full English breakfast in our hotel so set off looking for something more reasonable. Just down the street at the very elegant Golden Fleece Hotel, they offered a continental breakfast in a thoroughly charming setting so in we went. It was perfect. Great start to the day.

The George Inn - Lacock by Beausoleil
Lacock itself dates back to the 13th century and has remained largely unchanged over the centuries with its many lime washed, half-timbered and stone buildings. One of those buildings, The George Inn, established circa 1361 has an amazing history and is famous for its medieval open fire place with a dog wheel that you can see in the top left of the photo. The little dog used to run inside the wheel to turn the very large spit you see in the fireplace to the left. The food is excellent and the service friendly.

The Red Lion Inn by Beausoleil
The world's largest stone circle surrounds a small village. Within the village are St. James Church, Avebury Manor and the Alexander Keiller Museum that is arranged in two parts, the Stables Gallery that displays archaeological treasures from this World Heritage Site and the Barn Gallery that is a 17th-century threshing barn that houses interactive displays. There is a tea room at the Manor House, a snack bar at the Barn Gallery and the Red Lion Inn overlooking the stone circles.

Avebury Manor Tea Room (in the library) by Beausoleil
Avebury is a village in the center of a huge stone circle (kind of like a village in the middle of Stonehenge) and since a village needs a church and a Manor House, you can visit both either before or after you visit the standing stone circles. There is also the Red Lion Inn for refreshment although we loved the tea room set in the Manor House library.
