Crossing the Durance River in the rain by Beausoleil
The valley of the Durance river is amazing. There is a lot of industry but there is stunning scenery too. There are beautiful villages perched on the surrounding hills and the river has worn a wide valley for the wandering water.

Community gardens outside Carcassonne - Les Jardins de la Reille by Beausoleil
You go to Carcassonne to see the castle but there are other very interesting sites in the area. We found this by accident. We were driving around Carcassonne to visit Mirepoix and got stuck in traffic (morning commuters) and when I looked out the car window, we were driving a long a very large community garden along the Fresquet River. Fortunately we were going slowly enough that I could take some photos from the car.

Terrasson-Lavilledieu - Main Altar of Eglise Saint Sour by Beausoleil
Construction started under Bertrand de Rouffignac (1491-1505) and the monastery church was completed by Bertrand de la Faye (1520-1540) in a flamboyant Gothic style. The new buildings were burnt down during the Wars of Religion in 1569, leading to the decline of the abbey. The church was restored in the 19th century. When Saint Julien burnt down, Saint Sour became the parish church. They often have summer light shows on the church that are very colorful.

Saint-Jean-de-Côle - bridge over the river La Côle by Beausoleil
Saint-Jean-de-Côle is one of the Plus Beaux Villages of France. They are supposed to have a population of under 2000 and at least two sites of historic interest. The towns have to apply and the local citizens must be in favor of applying. This results in a charming and interesting and very friendly place to visit. We always search them out when we're driving in France. Saint-Jean-de-Côle is a little out of the way, but if you are in the northern Dordogne, it is worth a trip.

Our view at lunch in Tourtoirac - Restaurant Le LRD by Beausoleil
The Romanesque Abbey of Saint-Pierre-Ès-Liens de Tourtoirac is one of the oldest in the department and was one of the largest monastic establishments in Périgord. The beginning of construction dates back to the 11th century. At the end of the 13th century, a Benedictine community of 34 monks lived in the monastery. Today there is a Friends of the Abbey group of 130 who are trying to complete the renovation of the site. The village of Tourtoirac is known for the abbey and also for the Grottes de Tourtoirac, nearby caves you can visit. The caves are accessed by a lift (elevator) that descends 25 meters and then there is a flat walkway around the cave system that is suitable both for wheelchairs and strollers. Visits last about one hour. You may want a jacket since it is quite chilly in the caves.
