Église Saint Sulpice in Paris by Beausoleil
Église Saint Sulpice is one of our favorite churches in Paris. It is the second largest church in Paris following Notre Dame. Not only do they have three Delacroix murals and the Saint Sulpice Gnomon which is an astronomical measurement device located in the church and was built to determine the exact date of Easter, it is also the home to the marvelous organ built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll and the reason we love to attend church there. There are organ recitals before and usually after the 11:00 AM Mass on Sundays.

Fountain of the Orators in Place Saint-Sulpice by Beausoleil
Variously called Fountain of the Orators, Fontaine Saint-Sulpice and also, in French, "La Fontaine des quatre points cardinaux," which means the "Fountain of the 4 Cardinal Directions," as it faces North, South, East, and West. This name is also a pun, because "points cardinaux" in French is a play on words. It can be understood as "Point Cardinaux" which means "not Cardinals," as all four of the bishops portrayed in the statues, while renown, were never elevated to the position of Cardinal. It is directly opposite Saint-Sulpice Church and is occasionally covered by a fair set up in the square. The annual Poesy Fair was during our current visit. We visited the Poesy Fair many years ago and one of the publishers started talking to me and ended up giving me a book of poetry which I cherish. We didn't have that luck this year but did enjoy the festival. I was also happy to get a photo before they set up the festival since the tents pretty much ruin the view.

The famous Gnomon of Saint Sulpice by Beausoleil
This was a feature of the book and movie the Da Vinci Code and now tourists from all over the world visit the church looking for it . . . and ignoring the marvelous Delacroix murals in the side chapel.

Organ built by François-Henri Clicquot and reconstructed by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll in 1862. by Beausoleil
This is a beautiful instrument, a thrill to hear. There are free recitals 15 minutes before the 11 AM Mass on Sunday and a longer recital after the Mass. Afterwards, the organist allows you into the organ loft to ask questions.

The Poesie Fair in Paris is a favorite even though it manages to cover up one of my favorite fountains. There are poets, publishers, readings and lots of fun all in beautiful Paris.
