Domaine de Gretot - our home for the week - front planter and statue of a stag by Beausoleil
We rented the downstairs east wing of the chateau that was undergoing restoration. It was beautiful and the hostess/owner was a delight. We had a wonderful week.

Falaise - Statue of William the Conqueror by Beausoleil
Falaise was the birthplace of William the Conqueror, first of the Norman kings of England. The castle which overlooks the town from a hill was formerly the seat of the dukes of Normandy and is the oldest fortress in Normandy. The Talbot Tower was added by the English in the 15th century. The town is famous for a battle in the area during the Allied reconquest of France in 1944 in which 50,000 German troops were encircled and taken prisoner. While still under German occupation, two-thirds of Falaise was destroyed by Allied bombing, but it has since been restored. Places to visit are: l’Église Sainte Trinité and l’Église Saint Gervais-Saint-Protais, the castle of William the Conqueror, the Mémorial de Falaise - La Guerre des Civils, the Museum André Lemaitre, the adjoining Musée des Automates and the Château de la Fresnaye.

Guingamp - Basilique Notre Dame de Bon Secours - interior by Beausoleil
Throughout the church you can see attractive stained glass windows, although many of these are 19th century rather than the original windows, and the stained glass above the Porte au Duc is a 20th century addition renovation after the original was damaged during the second world war. On a sunny day, the reflections inside the church are beautiful. The principal chapel, and a reason that many visitors come here, is the Chapel of the Black Virgin on the north side of the basilica. The statue of the black Virgin and infant Jesus is ancient although its origins are unclear, and in the 17th century was a major pilgrim destination, because of which parts of the church such as the oratory were expanded. The rest of this chapel is also interesting: the 12 statues of the apostles that overlook the black Virgin are a 19th century addition, as is the mosaic floor that is made from marble and shows a labyrinth, reminding visitors of the difficult path that must be followed to reach spiritual enlightenment.
