Driving Home from Étretat - Storm coming . . . by Beausoleil
We had the perfect sunny day at Étretat but our luck ran out on the way home. That's a good time for your luck to run out, inside a nice dry car.

Meneham Folk Village (Ecomusée) by Beausoleil
We went to visit the ecomusée at Meneham on a gorgeous day in autumn. The most fun building was a 17th-century coastguard’s cottage with stone roof tucked between two huge rocks. It was built to spy on the sea in the period when France and England were at war. The village behind is of a later date, built in part to house customs men trying to stop smuggling. Later, farmers moved in, but in the last century it all fell to ruin until it was turned into a folk museum. They have tourist information, local crafts, foods and beverages and a very nice restaurant that includes outdoor dining. There are walks along the shore and beautiful beaches.

The Crofter's Cottage by Beausoleil
Step inside our crofter’s cottage and get a sense of a typical crofter’s dwelling between the 13th and 16th century. This is a favorite spot of the Museum Cat so you may see her there.

White Cottage by Beausoleil
Restored as a Victorian period cottage, this cruck-framed building used to be at the village of Harome. The interior and its contents are based on a typical late 19th century cottage. There’s a traditional parlour, bedroom and the kitchen complete with a working range oven.

Standing Stones at Avebury by Beausoleil
The world's largest stone circle surrounds a small village. When you start walking amongst the stones, they seem to go on forever. Unlike Stonehenge, you can walk right up to them and touch them and get a real feeling for the size of both stones and the site that holds them. According to Wikipedia: "The chronology of Avebury's construction is unclear. It was not designed as a single monument, but is the result of various projects that were undertaken at different times during late prehistory. Aubrey Burl suggests dates of 3000 BC for the central cove, 2900 BC for the inner stone circle, 2600 BC for the outer circle and henge, and around 2400 BC for the avenues." There is a large henge with a large outer stone circle and two separate smaller stone circles inside the center. The original purpose is unknown although archaeologists believe that it was probably used for some form of ritual or ceremony and more recent suggestions have been that it was an ancient observatory. Nearby are West Kennet Long Barrow, Windmill Hill and Silbury Hill, all worth a visit.

The Red Lion Inn by Beausoleil
The world's largest stone circle surrounds a small village. Within the village are St. James Church, Avebury Manor and the Alexander Keiller Museum that is arranged in two parts, the Stables Gallery that displays archaeological treasures from this World Heritage Site and the Barn Gallery that is a 17th-century threshing barn that houses interactive displays. There is a tea room at the Manor House, a snack bar at the Barn Gallery and the Red Lion Inn overlooking the stone circles.

My painting of a thatched house in Sandy Lane, Wiltshire by Beausoleil
We visited Sandy Lane on advice from our landlady. We told her we wanted to take pictures of thatched cottages for future paintings. She suggested this tiny village and nearly every house was thatched and lovingly cared for. Very picturesque. This is the first watercolor I did of Sandy Lane when we got home. It was juried into the local watercolor society's Open Show for this coming September. Very exciting.

Thatched house in Poltimore by Beausoleil
You come round a bend in the road to this lovely view. We were quite lost at this point but having a grand time. Devonshire is a great place to get lost. We had maps and two GPS devices so weren't too worried, just having fun.

Thatched house in Broadclyst, Devon by Beausoleil
Broadclyst is largely owned by the National Trust as part of Killerton House and is beautifully kept. We were there looking for the Clyston Mill. Although the sign clearly said "Open today 1-5," it was quite closed at 4:45. We didn't visit . . .
