St. Cyriac's Church from the Lacock Abbey Gardens by Beausoleil
The Botanic Garden at Lacock Abbey is extensive and fascinating. We started at the Greenhouse and adjacent herb garden. As we slowly wandered the garden paths, we were joined by a cute grey cat with white paws that I cheerfully named Abby since she was an Abbey cat. She followed us through the rose garden and all the way to Bide Brook before something else caught her attention. There are lovely views from the garden including of St. Cyriac's Church in the distance.

The Red Lion Inn - Lacock by Beausoleil
You pass the Red Lion going back and forth between the Abbey and the village. We got to know it quite well although we never ventured inside.

St. Cyriac's Church - Lacock by Beausoleil
St Cyriac's Church is a 14th-century Church of England church. A Norman church was built towards the end of the 11th Century and in the 15th century the very successful wool trade allowed the rebuilding to the Norman Gothic cruciform church we see today. There have been many alterations and renovations in the years since.

Local Accommodation and the Local Bakery in Lacock Village by Beausoleil
The Sign of the Angel, a restaurant with rooms and the Lacock Bakery are both historic buildings. We also discovered the bakery has quite a few other things for sale including ice cream cones. This was not an ice cream day, but good for future reference.

Riding through Lacock by Beausoleil
Lacock, home of Lacock Abbey is a National Trust site so the entire village is without tv anntennae, power poles and cell phone towers. Except for their costume, this could have been seen in any century.

The George Inn - Lacock by Beausoleil
Lacock itself dates back to the 13th century and has remained largely unchanged over the centuries with its many lime washed, half-timbered and stone buildings. One of those buildings, The George Inn, established circa 1361 has an amazing history and is famous for its medieval open fire place with a dog wheel that you can see in the top left of the photo. The little dog used to run inside the wheel to turn the very large spit you see in the fireplace to the left. The food is excellent and the service friendly.

The toilets and a tea room are in the stable area of Lacock Abbey. Of particular interest to me was the clock tower there.

The South Gallery in Lacock Abbey by Beausoleil
Lacock Abbey was founded in the early 13th century by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, as a nunnery in the Augustinian order. It remained a convent until the dissolution in the 16th century when it was then sold to Sir William Sharington who converted the convent into a residence where he and his family lived. The house was built over the old cloisters and its main rooms are on the first floor. The Tudor stable courtyard to the north of the house has retained many of its original features including the brewhouse and bakehouse but the rest of the house is a very mixed combination of styles due to constant changes and improvements over the years. The house was inherited by the Talbot family, and during the 19th century was the home of William Henry Fox Talbot. In 1835 he made what may be the earliest surviving photographic camera negative, an image of one of the windows. The house and the surrounding village of Lacock were given to the National Trust in 1944. The abbey houses the Fox Talbot Museum in the old Abbey barn.
