Prometheus by Ossip Zadkine in Paris by Beausoleil
Ossip Zadkine, a Russian sculptor, studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. This is his bronze of Prometheus completed in 1956 and installed at Place Saint-Germain-des-Prés beside the famous café Les Deux Magots and across from the beautiful church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. In mythology Prometheus stole fire from the gods to be used by humans and in this statue Zadkine has pictured him as he is holding the fire. I first saw the statue in 1996 and have revisited it many times. This last trip we managed to visit the Zadkine Museum, one of the free museums in Paris.

At the Zadkine Museum in Paris by Beausoleil
When we returned after visiting the garden, one of the museum employees offered to take our picture. This was fun since we get pictures of each other but seldom get both of us in the same photo. Having a Zadkine sculpture with us made it even better.

Garden of the Zadkine Museum - Paris by Beausoleil
The Zadkine Museum a museum dedicated to the work of Russian sculptor Ossip Zadkine. It is located near the Jardin du Luxembourg in the 6th arrondissement at 100 bis, rue d'Assas, Paris, France, and is open daily except Monday; an admission fee is only charged when an exhibition is on. My introduction to Zadkine was the statue of Prometheus in front of Saint-Germain-des-Pres church across from the Deux Magots restaurant. Since then, I've seen his work in various places in France including a magnificent Crucifix in a church in Caylus in the Tarn-et-Garonne region. The museum in Paris also has a small garden with more sculptures and you can visit Zadkine's atelier on the property.

Eglise Saint Germain and the Zadkine sculpture in front of Les Deux Magots by Beausoleil
We walked past this often as it seemed to be on the way to everything we wanted to visit in Paris. There is an absolutely wonderful underground fountain across the street from this. It looks like the sidewalk is buckling up but when you approach, you see and hear the water.
