Basilique Sainte-Thérèse de Lisieux - rose petals falling from the dome of the basilique by Beausoleil
Saint Thérèse of Lisieux was canonized in 1925 and the Basilique was started in 1929 and while blessed in 1937 and in use was not completed and consecrated until 1954 so it is a recent building as famous French churches go. We happened into a special Mass for a festival of some sort that continued into October. The Mass was attended by close to 4000 people, the capacity of the basilica. There was a procession carrying a reliquary at the beginning of the Mass and at the end rose petals fell from the dome during the procession. It was an amazing experience and one we were not expecting.

Saint Fiacre near Le Faouët - the Rood Screen by Beausoleil
You have to go inside the building to admire the most remarkable feature of the chapel, a splendid polychrome wooden rood screen. It is one of the most beautiful polychrome rood screens in Brittany. The chapel also has a beautiful set of 16th century stained glass windows illustrating the Passion, the life of Saint John the Baptist, a Tree of Jesse and the life of Saint Fiacre. On most days there is a volunteer to welcome you and give you printed information in several languages.

Guingamp - Basilique Notre Dame de Bon Secours - interior by Beausoleil
Throughout the church you can see attractive stained glass windows, although many of these are 19th century rather than the original windows, and the stained glass above the Porte au Duc is a 20th century addition renovation after the original was damaged during the second world war. On a sunny day, the reflections inside the church are beautiful. The principal chapel, and a reason that many visitors come here, is the Chapel of the Black Virgin on the north side of the basilica. The statue of the black Virgin and infant Jesus is ancient although its origins are unclear, and in the 17th century was a major pilgrim destination, because of which parts of the church such as the oratory were expanded. The rest of this chapel is also interesting: the 12 statues of the apostles that overlook the black Virgin are a 19th century addition, as is the mosaic floor that is made from marble and shows a labyrinth, reminding visitors of the difficult path that must be followed to reach spiritual enlightenment.

Notre Dame de Paris from rue d'Arcole by Beausoleil
This was as close as we could get after the April 2019 fire at Notre Dame. I took this in early June on our last day in Paris. At the beginning of our month there, rue d'Arcole had been closed off so this was an improvement. I suspect it will be many years before we can go inside again. So sad . . .

Sainte-Chapelle, Paris by Beausoleil
One of the absolute must-see sights in Paris, Sainte-Chapelle is no longer a functioning chapel but is visited for it's stained glass windows. Arranged across 15 windows, each 15 meters high, the stained glass panes depict 1,113 scenes from the Old and New Testaments recounting the history of the world until the arrival of the Crown of Thorns and other religious relics in Paris. The relics are no longer housed in Sainte-Chapelle having been moved to Notre Dame and now stored because of the Notre Dame fire. There are two different chapels, the lower chapel, originally dedicated to the the officers, and the upper chapel, dedicated to the king and his family. Both are amazing and utterly beautiful but the stained glass in the upper chapel is what you want to be sure to see.

Église de Saint Germain des Prés by Beausoleil
The church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés is an old Benedictine abbey of Paris founded in 543 by the Merovingian king Childebert I and the bishop of Paris Saint Germain. The abbey has had several names including Saint-Vincent and Sainte-Croix. It is a royal abbey and is directly subject to the Pope. The current choir was built in the middle of the 12th century in the Gothic style and consecrated by Pope Alexander III on April 21, 1163. It is one of the first French Gothic buildings and in the world. After the Revolution, all abbeys were abolished and St. Germain became a saltpetre factory. Worship was restored April 29, 1803. Since then, the church has been a parish church. Between 1821 and 1854 the church was restored by the architects Étienne-Hippolyte Godde and Victor Baltard and was classified as a historic monument in 1862.
