Tall Ships #1 by Joe_USPG
July 09 the tall ships came to Boston, MA. Most are big with tall masts. This one, I liked since it was much smaller and those maroon colored sails made it for me.

Annisquam Coastline by Joe_USPG
Just loved the rocks, the encrusted foggy shoreline, and the fact I was all alone while working on this scene in Annisquam, MA.

Ceiling of Trinity Church by Joe_USPG
There is much interior beauty in the Trinity Church, such as the murals by LaFarge and the stained glass windows by Burn-Jones and Morris. For us, it was the ceiling with its cupola. It is somewhat overwhelming with its colored patterns and rectangular design. To capture a good portion of the ceiling, the camera, using an 18 mm wide angle, was positioned on the floor in the middle of the central aisle with the timer set for 5 seconds, so one could get safely out of the way. It took three tries to get the correct camera position. Oh thank you digital- trial and error was the only way to get the image.

A Remainder of the Glastonbury Abbey by Joe_USPG
The solitary remains of what looks like a side entrance of the destroyed abbey struck a cord with me setting there in an open field with the hill in the background on an overcast day

Rockport, Early Morning by Joe_USPG
The 30 or so minutes of pre-dawn glow always offer up beautiful images over water, especially on a calm, clear day. This Image is no exception; taken at 5:05 am at the end of the town wharf. Sunrise was approximately 5:32 am. The weather conditions were just perfect with little or no wind, so a long exposure did not result in blurring of boats or their masts. The focus point was on the stern of the closest boat on the right.

Acorn Street at Night by Joe_USPG
This image is the result of blending two images in Photoshop; one image taken at 8s, the other at 2.5s to get definition in the gas lamps without a blown out of all the highlights as discussed in our Boston DVD (see www,usphotogroup.com ). If you are not experienced in Photoshop, just accept the over-exposure of the street lamps; otherwise use HDR with 7 bracketed images at 1.0EV. The HDR image can be adjusted to get less artificial looking colors once the tonal range is adequate. I sort of like the colors one gets from HDR treated images either coming Photomatix or Photoshop.

Tall Ships #2 by Joe_USPG
Just liked the way the ships were caught going in parallel with their bows moving into the picture. In the foreground is American vessel and the background ship is Portuguese.

Willow Pond II – Infra-red by Joe_USPG
Willow trees make ideal subject matter for an IR-camera. Here the willow trees, the tonal contrast of the smaller trees to its right, and the pond reflections, all together made for nice image.

A Cold Seat by Joe_USPG
A change of seasons. Snow adds an additional blanket of tranquility to the Mount Auburn Cemetery (MAC) in the winter. This morning shot was taken at Halcyon Lake as found in the DVD on Boston (see www.usphotogroup.com ). It evoked a feeling of solitude. There are many interesting statues and trees around this small pond which stand like silent sentinels in the winter cold. It’s worth exploring MAC when snow is on the ground.

JFK Library by Joe_USPG
After all, when there is not much color, usually converting to BW will add impact to the image especially with one that has a broad luminosity range as in this image of a section of the JFK Presidential Library.

Quincy Market by Joe_USPG
North Market St. has a great deal of ambience with its lamps and vendor stalls. We tried to capture that in this image, which was taken in the early morning about an hour after sunrise when few people are wandering around. The sunlight striking atop the dome of the building and the building’s perspective gave strength to the image.

The North End Skyline by Joe_USPG
The Charlestown Harbor walkway around the old naval shipyard offers much in the way of vistas of Boston. This image is a view of the Boston skyline with the steeple of the Old North Church on the left rising above the colorful apartment buildings lining Atlantic Avenue.

Bunker Hill Monument Under IR by Joe_USPG
It was use of an Infrared (IR) camera that gave this shot some impact. Note how the foreground explodes in white and blacks with good tonal range across the sky.

Georges Island, Fort Warren by Joe_USPG
Triangular shadows on the ceiling and floor of this storage room and the triangular roof line combine to make an unusual image of this secluded room. Even though the room is located on the ground floor, a tripod is needed. A monochrome image was called for here; gray walls and a grayish white ceiling do not exactly make for a colorful image. More importantly, this again is a morning shot. In the afternoon the shadows disappear.

Newbury Street, Sept 07 by Joe_USPG
If you didn’t know better, you would think this image was a painting by Ed Hopper. It has that look and feel to it. This scene and similar ones are not uncommon on Newbury Street.

The Falls, Copley Square by Joe_USPG
We could not leave Copley Square without an image of the multiple falls that feed the pool bordering the square. They run from about mid-April to October. It is best to capture them in low light. That way, you can get good definition between the falling water and the stone blocks. Also the water becomes slightly blurred with slow shutter speeds. This all adds up to a more dramatic picture.

Beach Grass at Good Harbor by Joe_USPG
Once over the bridge, to the left there is a large area of tall beach grass. We are not horticulturalists so we don’t know the type, but it dominates the area at the back of the beach. Two photographic conditions made this photograph appealing: a dramatic sky and the light coming from behind. Take away one or the other would reduce the impact of this image substantially. A strong wind was blowing during this shot. An f/11 aperture at 1/100s was used to blur slightly the grass to give a sense of motion.

Beacon Hill Side Garden by Joe_USPG
Houses on Chestnut Street, as with most of the homes on the Hill, are close to the street with little space for front gardens. This house has a side garden; taking a wide angle shot of it was irresistible.
