Some prefer in having a pleasant float on a traditional boat .. by prabir.b.sen
Today, we still find the typical traditional fishing boats being used in many parts of the eastern world and specifically in India's Eastern & Western coasts. These boats are mainly used by small time fishermen. Here is one with a difference. During the winter season from October till March, scores of people visit the picnic town of Taki situated in West Bengal in India. The river Ichhamoti separates the Indian border from Bangladesh. Tourists are very keen to take rides on these boats which take them deep into the border line of Bangladesh as it passes the picnic spots lined along the shores of the river, venturing into deep forest land approaching the Bangladesh border. Some prefer having a pleasant float on a traditional boat. When the tourists are gone, these small time fishermen return to their small time fishing.

Haystack by prabir.b.sen
This is how villagers in India stack hay. Stacking hay this way keeps the moisture away during the monsoon time, and the hay inside the stack remains fresh to be consumed by the cattle the villages own .. In olden times, the villagers used to stock their grains within this cottage like hay hut for the same reason. But now most of the grains they grow are sold and the rest are kept in nylon woven bags for their own consumption.

A heavenly Shikara ride by prabir.b.sen
The Dal Lake in Srinagar in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India is 8 Km long and has a of width of 4 Km, spreading over a total of 26 Sq. Km. If one is in Srinagar, boat rides in Dal Lake is an experience. These colourful boats are called Shiksaras and one could just get rowed for hours. You would find floating gardens within this lake, and if you should push the garden down into the lake with a stick, it would float up again. I found people in boats picking up whatever they have grown.

Your floating dreams .. by prabir.b.sen
It is the specialty in Srinagar in Kashmir. There are hundreds of houseboats lined up at the edge of the lake. The tourists spent a night or two in these luxurious hotels on water with the beauty of the snow capped mountains surrounding the lake, perhaps moving on to hotels on land to spend rest of their stay. I had spent 2 days in one of these houseboats and I experienced moments of great ecstasy. This how the row of houseboats glitter in the lake water at night. This photograph was taken in Srinagar on 4th November 2012 ...

The way to Aru is full of grandeur of mother Nature and this is one of them ...
Celebration Indian way .. by prabir.b.sen
In Hindu religion, Goddess Duga happens to be married to Lord Shiva. Worshiping of Goddess Durga is the largest celebration in the state of West Bengal in India which goes on for 4 days each year. At the end of the 4th day, Goddess Durga is supposed to be returning back. For Hindu women, marks of red powder (Sindoor) on their fore-head resemble that they are married and this is considered to be sacered by the religion. When Goddess Durga returns home after 4 days on Earth, every married woman bid farewell to the Goddess by putting this red powder (Sindoor) on Her forehead, wishing her a long married lifem as they invite her back to Earth next year. This occasion has now become a part of this huge celebration for all. In this photo one finds an American lady dancing with the crowd smeared with the red powder (Sindoor) ... Such is the spirit created during this Celebration .. This photograph was taken by me on 24th October 2012 ...

Toy Train - a heritage by prabir.b.sen
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the "Toy Train", is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal. Built between 1879 and 1881, the railway is about 86 kilometers (53 mi) long. Its elevation level varies from about 100 meters (328 ft) at New Jalpaiguri to about 2,200 metres (7,218 ft) at Darjeeling. The track after Kurseong and New Jalpaiguri has now completely vanished due to earthquake few years back. A local train now runs between Darjeeling and Kurseong. We took a "Joy Ride" on this train running between Darjeeling at 2,200 meters (7,218 ft) and Ghum at 2,258 meters (7,407 ft). The train stops at Batasia for 10 minutes and proceeds to Ghum and stops at Ghum for 30 minutes & then returns back to Darjeeling. It was an experience... This "Toy Train" is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
