ITALY_Ravenna - mosaic fontain (fragment) by vanessa
Modern fontain, covered with mosaics (oh, alike everything in Ravenna = city of mosaics). Weird, stuck near parking area in casual neighbourhood - aside of tourist trail, this fontain is over decorated and sparkling. I still liked it: desire of the artist to create something extraordinary in mosaics is almost religious, it is visible. And that erase any wish to critic.

ITALY_Ravenna_St Francis Church by vanessa
There r plenty of churches in Italy and plenty of outstanding mosaics in Ravenna. So, why St. Francis? Allright, it's the earliest example in Italy of the decorative use of majolica. It is also very beautiful outside - u can see on other photos here . Plus it stuck between tomb of Dante Alighieri and to Cripta Rasponi (Palazzo dela Provinsia) - both are famose themselves. The significance of this church is that remaining mosaic floor of crypt (9-10C) is under water.

Church is very nice, with flat stone facade, facing the square, floated mosaic floor in the crypt. There are also the tomb of Dante Alighieri. What is really beautiful - that all this hand-made treasure is living and breathing for longer then 10,000 years. It continues. That what I especially like about it.

Flat stone facade of the church is facing the square. Inside is a miracle floated mosaic floor in the crypt and tomb of Dante.

Basilica San Vitale is dating from ... 525. It's so old that hard to undersand. From outside - San Vitale is a small domed church in the Byzantine architectural style. But from inside - the ceilings of the choir and apse glitter with magnificent Byzantine mosaics in green and gold.
