Though this appears to be a simple wall of bricks, it is in fact one of the engineering feats that took Europe from Medieval times to the Renaissance. Brunelleschi figured out how to use both the herringbone pattern and an upside down arch that made building the dome without scaffolding possible. For centuries, no one could figure out how Brunelleschi built the dome but recent research seems to finally have figured it out. PBS NOVA did an excellent show on this mystery.
