St. Pierre, around the corner from Sacre Coeur, is one of the oldest churches in Paris. There was a Roman Temple followed by a Merovingian Church and then other churches and abbeys until the St. Pierre we see today (with additions) was started in 1133 and consecrated in 1147. It has been deconsecrated and reconsecrated over the years, bombed during the war and desecrated during the various revolutions. Much remains and much has been added. It is a magical place that I find much more interesting to visit than nearby Sacre Coeur. In addition to the ancient statues, there is marvelous modern stained glass by the master stained glass window maker Max Ingrand, and these wonderful bronze doors by the Italian, Tommaso Gismondi, were added in 1980.
