The church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés is an old Benedictine abbey of Paris founded in 543 by the Merovingian king Childebert I and the bishop of Paris Saint Germain. The abbey has had several names including Saint-Vincent and Sainte-Croix. It is a royal abbey and is directly subject to the Pope. The current choir was built in the middle of the 12th century in the Gothic style and consecrated by Pope Alexander III on April 21, 1163. It is one of the first French Gothic buildings and in the world. After the Revolution, all abbeys were abolished and St. Germain became a saltpetre factory. Worship was restored April 29, 1803. Since then, the church has been a parish church. Between 1821 and 1854 the church was restored by the architects Étienne-Hippolyte Godde and Victor Baltard and was classified as a historic monument in 1862.
