Mazu (or Ma-tsu) is a Chinese sea goddess. In 1756 a Chinese ship heading to Ryukyu (now Okinawa) was damaged because of typhoon near Maja village on Kume Island, Japan. All the travellers and the crew was rescued. This temple was built to thank and enshrine the sea goddess.
