  • New England Trip - Conference, tourism, family
  • CoolerClimes! - Marty is giving a paper at a conference in Copenhagen on 25 August, so we're leading up to it with a vacation! This is a chance for Marty to show me some of his favorite haunts in Berlin, Cologne, and Dusseldorf and for both of us to touch base in Scandinavia for the first time. I'm going to try to update people and preserve memories through this blog. Never blogged before, so bear with me!
  • Singing and Sightseeing - For over twenty years, one of our great pleasures has been shapenote singing, otherwise known as sacred harp singing. As on a number of occasions, we have enjoyed singing with visitors from the UK, we have long wanted to take in the UK Sacred Harp Convention, held every year in September. Because I am now retired (Yay!) and Marty is on leave, we leapt at the chance to go this year. So that is how this trip--and this blog--will start. After that, we plan a quick hop to Salisbury to visit its stunning cathedral and to see Stonehenge. And then four days in London--all too short, of course, but a chance to revisit some of our favorite spots and take in a bit of theatre.
  • REALLY Cooler Clime! - Marty has been in Russia since 1 February and won't be home again until 1 July. I am going over to stay with him for three weeks in Moscow. This will be my travel blog. For Marty's great expat blog, go tomdenysblog.wordpress.com
  • Pilgrimage - On this trip I am taking advantage of a rare opportunity to tour the ancient sites sacred to my religious tradition on a tour that will link that tradition to the lives and concerns of the various groups living in Israel and Palestine today. The tour has been organized by Mejdi Tours for a group from my church, St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill. I am confident that this tour will not only respect but emphasize the inseparability of holiness and justice. Be sure to check out our group blog! holylandpilgrimage2013.wordpress.com One reason I am excited about this trip is that after it I will have visited all three of the great pilgrimage sites of medieval Europe: Rome, Santiago de Compostela, and Jerusalem. Not sure why I think that's so cool, but I do.
  • A New Pilgrimage - Two years ago, I took a tour of the holy land with a group from my church, St. Mark's on Capitol Hill. It was a life changing experience. The only thing missing was my inability to share it with my husband, Marty, as he could not take off from work. This year he can travel, so I am going again. For those of you on Facebook, just look for "Mejdi Tours" for great info and pictures that give a fine sense of this wonderful company. As was the case the last time, this tour will integrate sites from religious tradition with people and activities dedicated to social justice. Our group will have its own blog at the following address: http://www.mejditours.com/category/group-tour-blogs/st.-marks-pilgrimage/ If Marty starts a blog of his own, I will provide the link here.
  • La Vita a Firenze - For the spring semester of 2016, from 11 January to 30 April, Marty is serving as the director of George Mason's study abroad program in Florence. (It's a tough job, but someone has to do it.) He arrived in Florence on 8 January. I stayed home to get things together with the house and myself! I plan to leave on 8 February, arriving the next day. I resisted writing this blog on Travelpod, as it does not generally cover traveling per se. Rather it will be an account of three months living in Florence. But I had a lot of trouble with other blog sites, and I am familiar with Travelpod. And we will certainly be doing some traveling during our time here. At the end of our time in Florence, we will be traveling to Greece. That trip will be the subject of a separate blog.
  • We need a vacation! Rome and Greece - Evidently four months in Florence was not enough! But after all, Marty was here to work. We knew it would be hard to find time to visit our favorite city, Rome, during the semester. And it seemed like a great opportunity to visit Greece. So we are off at the end of the semester for a new old country and new adventures!
